Critical AI

On this page I keep a list of resources for people that, like me, are somewhat sceptical or worried about AI and its impact on education and beyond. if you see something along similar lines, feel free to drop me an email on mail-at-thisdomain.

AI in general

Welkom in de AI Fabriek (Podcast, Dutch) and Welkom in de AI Fabriek (Essays, Dutch)
A podcast series (in Dutch) aimed at a non-technical audience, explaining the basic underpinnings of AI and how that impacts the world around us. Each podcast episode is accompanied by a corresponding essay by the creator, Ilyas Nasrullah.

Atlas of AI – Kate Crawford (Book)
An in-depth book exploring some of the issues around AI, including its environmental impact and its inherent bias and unfairness. Really dives deep into the history of topics, such as classification and facial recognition, way before modern day AI (in some cases even way before computers!)

AI and education

Beyond ChatGPT – Marc Watkins (Blog series)
A seven part blog series about AI in education, looking at is from various angles. Good wide intro on thinking about AI & education outside of the dominant Silicon Valley narrative.

Teaching Machines – Audrey Waters (Book)
This is a book that is not about AI, but also it is. It is a hopeful book, I find, about technology’s relation with schools and their failed quests to implement machines within the school system. Highly recommended although not 1:1 applicable to modern day AI.

Miscellaneous

Death Glitch – Tamara Keese (Book)
This book is totally out there, but awesome! It talks about the relationship between death and technology, from memorial websites to cancer blogs and internet of things. Not so related to AI, but very recommended to get a better, wider view on technology and how some parts of everyone’s lived experience (namely, death) is entirely out of view of technology creation.
