This page contains all info for the ‘Brief intro to programming’ workshop.
Scratch
- First watch a small story demo in Scratch
- Now build your own story with Carl the Cat and his friends:
Tips:- Try running your program often to see if everything works well
- Use [say] for text balloons, [switch costume to] to change appearance and [point in direction] to turn around.
- Want to continue with stories in Scratch? Create your own Donald Duck story! Lesson and start program.
Python
- First look at this Turtle demo.
- This demo now creates a square, can you make it draw other shapes? Try to create:
- A triangle
- A hexagon
- A spirograph, like this:

- You can also use color by adding the line “pen.color(‘green’)” before the line for i in range(turns):
- This demo now creates a square, can you make it draw other shapes? Try to create:
- Now explore this program that creates multiple shapes in one program.
- Now try to create these shapes.
- When you have succeeded, create a real drawing like a face or a fish or a house.
Python data analysis
- You can also analyze and visualize data with Python. Inspect this program that prints the first lines of Hamlet. It looks for the word ‘not’ and prints that in red and in a smaller size. It also draws a square around the word. Change it so that it looks for a different word. Experiment with sizes and colors, and different shapes to draw. You could also analyze a different text, for example something from the news or an email you received.
